2 Broke Girls Update
Max and Caroline celebrate the holiday season in this week’s episode of 2 Broke Girls. But Caroline’s festive mood turns sour when her father cancels her trip to visit him in prison. The girls convince Han to feed the homeless on Thanksgiving. Then the girls decide to be elves for Christmas to earn money to replace a stand mixer that Caroline broke.
The love interest, Johnny, turned out to be a creep with a girlfriend. I was disappointed when the writers decided to take away the possibility of a real love connection for Max. The show would be much better if they added better supporting characters. They have toned done on the stereotypes, and they even made Oleg likable in the last episode. But it still feels like it is lacking something, other characters. I would like to see someone else from the girl’s life brought in like a family member, an old friend or a boyfriend.
I want to the cupcake business money ticker go up. After ten episodes, the girls have less than $700 in the business fund. In last week’s episode, Caroline purchased Johnny’s $500 painting and had Max destroy it to try to get over Johnny. Throughout the season, the girls have wasted a lot of money rather than invest it. I would like to see something more happen with the business because the season is almost over.
The ratings continue to hover around the eleven million range give or take a few thousand. New Girl tied 2 Broke Girls last week with a 5.5 adult demo average. Both shows are the highest-rated comedy for the fall 2011 season. Comedies with female-leads fared well this season.
Tribune Company Update
The Tribune Company submitted a Third Amended Plan of Reorganization to the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware November 18. The company said the new plan should address the concerns the court expressed last month. The organization requested a confirmation hearing in February 2012.

Insults and Bankruptcy
2 Broke Girls
The show had almost 11 million viewers on Monday, Oct. 31. The ratings are strong, but some other bloggers/reviewers have complaints.
One of the biggest complaints is the racist overtones. I can agree. The diner owner, Han Lee, is the typical stereotype of an Asian. He is a Karaoke-loving, nerdy and naïve Asian man. The writers need to consider getting rid of the character or stop using such offensive stereotypes for the man as well as other characters.
My favorite development has been the introduction of a possible romance between Max and the sexy, smart bartender. Johnny works at a neighborhood bar and he frequents the diner. Last week, he came to the girl’s apartment to help Caroline build a Murphy bed, but Max ends up hanging out with him outside. In this week’s episode, Johnny tries to hook Caroline up with his friend from college without much luck.
The girls approached a popular coffee shop with a proposal to sell cupcakes, but the owner told the girls that the cupcakes were not pretty enough. Caroline signs them up to go to a cupcake decorating class taught by two stereotypical Italian girls. Max struggles to make pretty cupcakes and becomes obsessed with making a flower on a cupcake. She goes back to the class with a flower cupcake that took her three hours to make, but she ends up smashing it in front of the two Italian girls. Max’s dislike for the two girls is apparent when she gives them two cupcakes with insults on them. Two homosexual men in the class with Max and Caroline love the idea of insult cupcakes for their wedding shower and hire the girls to make their cupcakes.
Jennifer Coolidge, best known for her role as the MILF in American Pie, will be joining the cast of “Girls”. She will play Sophie, who moves into the girls’ apartment building in Williamsburg Brooklyn. Rumor has it that the role was written specifically for Coolidge.
Tribune Company
U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Kevin Carey rejected the Tribune Company’s bankruptcy plan and a competing reorganization proposal on Monday. The Tribune Company plans to revise the plan and it feels positive the government will approve.
The Tribune Company owns some of the top newspapers in the country. It would be a shame for something to happen to the publications. People don’t understand the value of professional journalism anymore. Many people rely on news acquired from blogs and citizen journalism. The people writing these “news” stories unfortunately are not trained. They don’t know much about journalism ethics or the process of news gathering. The blogs tend to be extremely biased and sometimes untrue.

Tribune Company and 2 Broke Girls
Tribune Company
The Tribune Company owns multiple radio stations, television networks and publications among other investments. They own large publications like the Las Angeles Times and the Chicago Tribune.
After a Sam Zell led a buy-out in 2007, the billionaire left the company with more than $8 million in debt. Tribune Company filed for bankruptcy in 2008 as a consequence to the buy-out. The company agreed to pay $7 million to the Internal Revenue Service this month after allegations that the leveraged buy-out violated tax laws.
The company currently awaits a decision from U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Kevin J. Carey to pick one of two restructuring plans to bring the company out of bankruptcy. The Delaware judge approved bonuses for the management of the Tribune Company, about 640 employees, that can be anywhere from $16 million to $42 million dollars. The reward only happens if the company hits a certain financial target. A strange move for a business that is broke.
I don’t understand how this company goes from being successful to bankrupt in a matter of a year. It seems odd. I wonder if there are any criminal charges filed because it seems like something else is very wrong with this situation.
2 Broke Girls
The show is still doing well and CBS signed for the rest of the season. A bond is forming with Max and Caroline that makes the characters seem more realistic. In the last episode, the girls break into Caroline’s old house to get her night guard. When Max sees the life Caroline was forced to give up, she forms a new opinion of Caroline.
While they are in the house, Max forms a relationship with the spa bathtub in Caroline’s bathroom which is funnier than it sounds. The girls decide to take some of Caroline’s designer clothes to sell for the business…smart move. But when Max sounds the alarm in the furs the girls have to high-tail it out of the house. Then they use some cash found in a purse to go to Caroline’s favorite sushi restaurant, which the girls underestimate the cost and are forced to pay with some of the clothes.
My only criticism at this point is the characters in the diner. I personally do not like the cook, Oleg, and the owner. The two characters just don’t seem to fit. I think the writers need to phase both characters out and replace them with better known actors or at least actors who are more likable.

Ratings drop in the second week
The premiere of 2 Broke Girls brought in 19.15 million viewers last week, but the ratings dropped by 7.55 million viewers for the second episode. It appears that the first episode of 2 and a Half Men this season brought more viewers to the network. It came as no surprise when the ratings dropped in the second week.
I enjoyed the second episode of “Broke Girls” titled “And the Break-Up Scene.” Caroline steals Max’s final break-up scene with her cheating ex-boyfriend, which infuriates Max. The two girls decide to split ways once again.

I enjoyed the second episode of “Broke Girls” titled “And the Break-Up Scene.” Caroline steals Max’s final break-up scene with her cheating ex-boyfriend, which infuriates Max. The two girls decide to split ways once again.
But after Caroline drunkenly apologizes and confides in Max the two rekindle the friendship. Max convinces the “drunken” Caroline to sign a contract stating she will stay out of Max’s relationships. Max starts to take their dream cupcake business more seriously when Caroline admits that it was all she had to look forward to in the future.
The characters develop more in the second episode. Max and Caroline start to form a bond, which creates a more natural atmosphere. But the other characters in the show still haven’t made an impact. The cook, owner and cashier at the diner have no real part in the story. I hope in future episodes they become a bigger part of the story. The humor remains raunchy in the second episode. Caroline sneaks into Max’s bedroom at night because she hears noises outside. After a brief argument, Max agrees to let Caroline sleep in her bed. Later that night, Max’s ex uses a key for the apartment to get in, and finds the girls in bed. A few cracks were made about Max turning into a lesbian. She promptly takes the key from her ex and kicks him out of the apartment.
Max complains to Caroline about the smell of the horse crap in the back yard. Caroline says it is just the smell of Brooklyn. Dressed in her white chenille outfit, Caroline walks outside to see the horse and slips in the crap ruining her only clothes. Unfortunately for her, street crews shut off the water to the apartment. Max takes Caroline to her rich bosses house to shower where Caroline falls asleep in the bosses bed. The boss finds Caroline’s hair in the bed and thinks her husband is cheating, which of course he is but not with Caroline. Caroline infiltrates Max’s life; something Max hates. But the two work out their differences. The episode creates a strong foundation for the girls as friends. The series begins with a great start.
I think the ratings will even out in the few weeks with a strong following around 11 million viewers. Not too shabby compared to other series that premiered this fall. I expect to see it again next season.Loss of 7.55 million; 2.6 shares

2 Broke Girls Preview
The new fall sitcom, 2 Broke Girls, premieres Monday, September 19, at 8:30 p.m. CBS scheduled the program in between two successful shows, How I Met Your Mother and 2 and a Half Men. I believe CBS made a great choice for the new sitcom because people will definitely tune in for the revamped 2 and a Half Men featuring Ashton Kutcher. The time slot for “Girls” is a highly desired spot for any sitcom.
2 Broke Girls stars Kat Dennings (Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist) and Beth Behrs (American Pie Presents: The Book of Love), who meet at a sleazy diner where Dennings’ character, Max, waitresses. Dennings plays the sassy, streetwise New Yorker and Behrs plays the uptown trust fund brat. Behrs character, Caroline, comes in the diner to apply for a job. Max tells the boss not to hire Caroline, but he does anyway. The girls become friends regardless of their differences. Then Max offers to let Caroline move in with her. The two end up combining their skills to start a cupcake business.
The show follows the familiar format of an odd-couple living together despite their evident differences. The characters are well-cast, but, historically speaking, female-led sitcoms don’t fare well. Producers Michael Patrick King (Sex and the City) and Whitney Cummings (Comedy Central’s Roast regular) use raunchy humor and strong female leads to create a modern day Laverne and Shirley.
One scene shows a customer snapping his fingers at Max to get service, and she not-so-kindly explained that “this is the sound that dries up my vagina”, while snapping her fingers in his face. I have watched the fall preview and I must say every time I see that clip I crack up. Kat Dennings fits the character extremely well.
“Girls” demonstrates the current financial climate for most 20-somethings in America today. People of this generation can relate with being broke and working at a job they hate to make ends meet. I know I do.
Sex in the City is one of my favorite shows and I love sitcoms. I expect “Girls to be just as funny as Cummings with the entertainment I enjoyed from Sex and the City. Critics expect 2 Broke Girls to be one of the best new shows this fall. I hope they are right. I miss the days when sitcoms were king.
